William travels to Geneva to recover from the emotional burden of William and Justine's deaths, but instead of getting the relief he wanted, he encounters the monster near a glacier. While Victor is confident that the monster was responsible for strangling William to death, he does not tell anyone because he feels that his story would not be taken seriously and that he would only make a fool of himself. Even though she is not guilty, she chooses to "confess", leading to her execution. Justine is accused of committing the crime because she had in her possession a photo that William was supposedly carrying with him right before his death. Victor receives a letter from his father, Alphonse, stating that William was murdered. Victor is nursed back to health by Henry. While he reunited with his friend Henry Clerval, the monster disappears.
However, he soon realizes that he has created a hideous monster and runs out of his apartment upon beholding his creation.
After a lot of research and hard work, he is thrilled as he successfully creates the monster, who is made up of the dead body parts of various people. He becomes fixated on the idea of bringing the dead back to life, and begins studying alchemy by himself in conjunction with his studies at the university. His mother, Caroline, dies of scarlet fever just before Victor leaves to study at the University of Ingolstadt. Unfortunately, Victor's happy life does not last very long.
